January 28th – Took A Little Break

I had an awful day at work yesterday.  It was one of those days where I was under a deadline and nothing went as planned. I ended up leaving a little early, very frustrated, with the plan to run outside on the Bear Creek Greenway.  Unfortunately, that didn’t work out either.   I was starving when I left work so I cooked something when I arrived home so it would be ready after my run.  Good plan but I took too much time.  When I finished cooking, it was already getting dark so I decided to just eat and run in the morning.   Another good plan but that didn’t work out either.  I woke up with plenty of time to run this morning but I opted to stay in my warm bed instead of venturing out in the cold to run.   As a result, I am frustrated with myself this morning and I can’t wait to redeem myself with a three-mile run after work.

January 5th – Off To A Running Start

This year is off to a running start for me.  I had a great day at work today and followed up with a great day at the gym.  My great day at work wasn’t for any particular reason.  I just really like my job and had a lot of geeky nerdy fun today.

I almost skipped the gym today.  I skipped lunch and was feeling tired and hungry by the end of my work day.  On my way home, I was trying to convince myself that working out every other day will give me better results.  When I arrived home, I overcame my laziness and laced up my running shoes.  I didn’t have much energy on the treadmill.  My legs were sore and heavy and my head wasn’t really in it.  I finished two miles, alternating between 5mph and 6.5mph and then walked for a bit to try to work out some of the soreness in my legs.  The walk didn’t help much so I hit the weights and left the gym, not so wonderfully, sore. I am heading to bed.  Hopefully a little sleep will help the situation.

December 14th – Starting The Week Off Right Again

I always like when I have a good day but a good Monday just makes the whole week a little sweeter. I think part of the reason for my awesome Monday is that I had a great weekend. I didn’t really do anything special. A friend of mine had a birthday on Saturday so I hung out with her and her kids during the day and then had a really yummy meal that evening. We went to Shoji’s and it was awesome. Shoji’s is a Teppanyaki-style Japanese restaurant in Medford.  The food was really good and the kids really enjoyed watching the food prepared at the table.  Sunday was a lazy day full of movies and leftovers.  It was relaxing.

I woke up to an early phone call this morning.   My Mom is currently in Oklahoma and forgot about the time difference.  I was up in plenty of time to hit the gym this morning but I opted instead to wait until after work.  I like catching Monday Night Football while running on the treadmill.  It’s not as good as running on the Greenway but it’s a good substitute for the winter.   I set out to run a mile and a half.   My plan is to slowly build my speed a mileage over the next couple of months so I will have a strong base when I start marathon training in the spring.  I am making sure to focus on building strength, and endurance through progressively longer runs and weight training.  I plan on working on speed a bit once I have a solid base to work from.  I think this will lead to overall better health and make marathon training easier to stick with long-term.  Today’s run was almost easy.  I had plenty more in the tank but I decided to stick with my plan.  I will push myself later in the week if I still feel like I have the reserves.

November 16th – Gym Membership

After work today I went down to the local gym and signed up.  These days it’s dark by the time I get home from work and it’s really been messing with my running schedule. I know this will make it easier to get back into a routine.   I had a great workout tonight.  I spent about a half hour on the treadmill before hitting the weights for a bit.  I know it’s a little silly but the treadmills all have built in television screens.  I was able to watch a quarter and a half of Monday Night Football while running three miles. I worked my arms and back today and left the gym exhausted.  I love that feeling.  My goal this week is to run three miles every day this week.

November 11th – Foul Weather / Foul Mood

Do you ever have one of those days?   One of those days where everything just seems a little off.  I don’t know if it’s the weather or season or what but I have been in a bad mood all day.  I didn’t run this morning.  I don’t have an excuse. I woke up in plenty of time and it wasn’t even raining but I just didn’t feel like going.   I didn’t have to go into the office today, instead I worked from my favorite coffee shop.  I really like the flexibility I have at work.  I believe the reason for my foul mood is my lack of running.   I miss being able to fit in a lunchtime run.  Since my move to Central Point, I can’t seem to get in a good run.  Now that the weather has turned wet and cold, it’s really hard to get out there.  I am going to head over to the local gym right now and check it out.

November 9th – Smokey Morning Mile

Smokey The BearWhen I woke up, I looked out my window and it looked really foggy and cold.  I was dreading the run as I put on my running gear.  When I opened my door I realized that while it was cold outside, it was not fog that I saw but smoke.  There must be a fire somewhere nearby.  I tried a new route this morning.  This time I went out my front door and turned left.  It was a lot nicer than running up the main drag.  Much less traffic and sidewalks about half of the time.  The only problem is the loop that way is only 1.2 miles.  Even in the smoke, I was able to run the whole thing.  I still felt a bit out of breath the whole time but the good news is my lungs are finally getting better.  Tomorrow morning I am going up my morning run to 2 miles.  My goal is to be running 5k every morning by week’s end.

November 3rd – Foggy Morning Run

When I woke up this morning it was foggy and cold.  I almost didn’t run but a call from my youngest daughter saying “You should run Dad, you should, you really should.” changed that.  I planned my morning route to run past her bus stop so I can say hi in the morning and she was really looking forward to it.  I quickly put on my running garb and headed out the door.   I am not sure what’s up with me these days but I can’t run at all.  I was excited so I started out a bit too quickly and was quickly out of breath.  It feels like I am still sick.   I can’t seem to catch my breath.  I started coughing after the run and have been coughing all morning.  I ended up taking three walk breaks on my short 1.24 mile run.  I timed them to coincide with the stop lights so it felt less like cheating.  Overall it was a good run and I feel great this morning, other than the annoying cough.  I am going to try again tomorrow and see if things get better.

November 2nd – Halloween Was Awesome

My Halloween morning started with a trip to the store for a costume.  It was raining in Central Point but nice in Ashland so I still expected to run the Monster Dash.  I couldn’t find the costume I wanted so I went with the most embarrassing thing I could find as I knew my kids would totally enjoy it.  I ended up dressing as a baby, complete with bonnet, bib, and pajamas with feet.  My girls loved it!  When I picked them up, their Mom informed me that they wouldn’t be running with me as it was raining.   Attempted to explain that the weather in Ashland was nice (I called ahead to confirm) but quickly realized it was a lost cause.  We instead went out for lunch and headed up to Ashland to catch the parade.  The Ashland Halloween parade was a lot of fun.  There were some really cool costumes and my girls really enjoyed joining the parade for a few blocks.

Later that evening we went on a marathon trick-or-treating spree which covered most of Central Point and some of Medford.  I didn’t get a chance to run this weekend but walking around for hours in a baby costume should count for something :)

With the time change running in the morning should be much easier.  I am going to try tomorrow morning and see how it goes.

October 22nd – A Zig Zag Run

I just went for a zig zagging run through my neighborhood in central point.  I decided to stay off the main roads and, instead, run up and down the streets around my place.  In total I logged 2.83 miles, just barely shy of my 3 mile goal.    Today’s run was still a bit hard but much easier than yesterday.  I think a couple of runs from now I will feel good again.  I am excited.

October 21st – Running Again

I started to get a crazy headache about 3pm today and it kept getting worse throughout the end of the day.  I am sure it’s mostly due to dehydration.  I have been totally lax in the h2o department.  I almost skipped the run when I got home but decided to go anyway.  I used the Map My Run website to figure out a 3 mile loop that starts at my place.  I have mixed feelings about the new route.  On one hand it is a lot easier to not have to commute to run but on the other I really don’t like running next to traffic.   Today’s route was on the main street here in Central Point.   I think it will help to map a route that follows less congested areas.

Speaking of congestion, I really only made it a 1.45 miles today.  I can still feel a lot of congestion in my chest.  I have tried not running and I can’t really take it anymore so now I am going to try running and see what that does.  I am thinking of it as more of an experiment than just plain running when I’m sick so Mom…  I am running in the name of science :)
