September 30th – Another Mile
Well I made it another mile. Running while sick is just no fun at all. I actually did better than yesterday but still had to turn around at the half mile point. I probably could have run a bit further today (maybe two miles) but I didn’t want to push things and mess up my run this weekend. I feel much better after the run. It really helps to get my energy level up and really improves my overall mood. I should probably take a day off tomorrow but, I guess, that will depend on how I feel in the morning. One of the problems I am having with my mid-afternoon run is that I found this awesome bakery here in Ashland. I have been making it a routine to stop by the bakery in the morning, on the way to work, to pick up a loaf. Then, I have been sitting at my desk eating bread (cinnamon chip) all morning. By run-time, my belly is full of bread which leads to sluggishness and cramping. The goal for tomorrow is to either run first thing in the morning or skip the bakery on the way to work. I think it will make a huge difference.

September 30th – Cold and Rainy
I just love sleeping when it’s cold and rainy out. I think I was in bed by 9:30 last night and I know I slept in till about 8:30 this morning. It’s just great being all warm under the covers when it’s nasty outside. Especially when you’re sick. I believe I actually have a cold. A friend of mine told me to take vitamin D so I am doubling up on both the D and the fluids today with the hope of being able to run the scheduled 6 miles this weekend. The schedule calls for 6 miles today. I am going to run at lunch but I am not really expecting anything more than a mile or two. My congestion is much worse than yesterday so I don’t want to push it.

September 29th – Cold and Congested
Well I think I am officially going to get sick. I went out for my lunch-time run and ran about half a mile before I had to stop. I just couldn’t breathe. It felt like I just couldn’t get enough air. I forced myself to run back but I am still a little bummed that I only ran 1 mile. I am going to double up on the h2o and try again tomorrow.

September 29th – Cold and Clear
Last night’s rain has cleared the air considerably. So far this morning it has been cold out so I am really looking forward to a cold and clear run at lunch-time. I am actually feeling a bit under the weather today. I have been fighting the start of a cold for the past couple of days and I think the cold is starting to get the upper hand. I always catch some sort of cold when the weather changes so I am not too worried about it. This weekend’s long run is only 6 miles so it is the perfect time to get sick (if there ever was a perfect time). To try and minimize the effects/duration, I am doubling up on the fluids today (so far that means a large pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks, but I am switching to water now). I will write again after my run this afternoon.

September 28th – A New Week
I am looking forward to this week. There have been a few fires in the area and the smoke has made it really hard to run. My phone/mp3 player/GPS unit also broke so it has been hard to get out there and run without technology. I am taking today off as planned and then going for my 3 miles tomorrow morning.

September 18th – Day Off
Yesterday’s after work run was exhausting but a good time. I was scheduled to meet a friend after work so I only had about 30 minutes to complete the run, shower, and get on the road. I pushed myself a bit on the (uphill) first half of the run and I pushed myself even harder on the downhill. In the end, I completed the run in just over 30 minutes (kind of slow but I really felt it). I am a bit glad today is a day off. I woke up a bit sore but that wore off quickly. I am going to spend some time, this evening, stretching and getting ready for tomorrow’s long run (8 miles). I am going camping after the run so I am going to try and start early (around 7am) that way I have plenty of daylight. I am really looking forward to the morning run.

Sept 17th – A Revised Plan
I spent the morning in meetings so I don’t have a whole lot to report. I am having lunch with a friend so it looks like today’s 3 mile run will have to wait until after work. Woke up with a bit of lower leg pain this morning so I am looking forward to the run to see how things go. The original plan was to start in week 6 of the HH plan, as the Las Vegas Marathon is only 13 weeks away but I spoke with my friend who will be training with me and we decided to start with week 1 of the plan and see how things go. If possible, we may skip forward after building a more solid base. If not, I will just start the taper early with my longest run being 17 miles. I still think I will have enough of a base at that point to run LV. If anyone has an opinion (Tammy) I would love to hear it. Back to work for now, I will write again after tonight’s run.

Sept 16th – Woo Hoo That Was A Great Run!
I just love running these days. I am having such a great time. Well… to be honest the first mile and a half or so is always a bit painful but after that I settle into a rhythm and running is comfortable. I think I am going to work on starting out a bit slower. I believe that will make the transition into comfortable running a bit easier and save me a bit of pain. You know what they say about pain (it hurts!). My lunch friend ended up in an epic meeting so we re-scheduled lunch and I was able to get my run in early. Today’s HH prescribed 6 miles was fun. I really enjoy that part of the run where I run out of sidewalk, cross the city limits, and start heading out-of-town. It just feels like I have run a great distance. The trip back into town is even better because I can see the Ashland Springs Hotel (my start/finish line) in the distance. I think it also helps that the way back is mostly downhill. Now more than ever I am looking forward to this weekend’s long run.

Sept 16th – Can’t Wait To Run This Evening
I had an early meeting this morning so I didn’t get a chance to run before work. I am also meeting a friend for lunch today so I will have to put off my 6 mile run until after work. The friend I am meeting for lunch is joining me in my Las Vegas Marathon training and has already put in her six miles today. I am excited to have her training with me. I don’t know if it’s the Eat Local Challenge diet or what but I have tons of energy these days. I could barely sleep last night and I can’t wait to run this evening!

Sept 15th – Marathon Training Is A Go
I know I wrote that I was going to give it another week before re-starting my marathon training but you have to understand how today’s run went: Being the week before the planned re-start of my marathon training, I set out today to do the “Hal Higgdon Plan” prescribed 3 miles to see how things went. Well things went great! The first mile or so was a bit difficult but I forgot that once you get into a rhythm things get easier. At the turn-around point, I was feeling pretty good and by the end I felt like I could have run twice as far. Hmm.. twice as far…. that just happens to be the distance called for tomorrow so marathon training part 2 is officially a go! I am really excited for tomorrow’s 6 mile run and this weekend’s long run.
